shallow pears

2.29.2012

I know I have only been sharing my instagram photos on here & that's the primary purpose of this blog, but I can't resist sharing this photo.  A couple of weeks ago I was photographing some pears I bought at the market.  I'm crazy in love with shallow depth of field and I love this image for exactly that reason.  I used a 50mm 1.8 lens for this image. I'm in love.

the back of his head

I would know the back of this head anywhere.

pool shadows

2.28.2012

I was at my parents house a couple of weeks ago and saw this amazing shadow on the pool deck.  I think all of the shapes that compromise the whole are really beautiful.

happy little sprig

2.24.2012

This little guy was in my valentine's bouquet of flowers.  I like his form, texture, and vibrant color.

heirlooms

2.23.2012

I found these heirloom tomatoes at the market this past weekend.  Like everything else I've been talking about lately, these guys caught my eye because of how unusual they look--especially the red and yellow tomato.  It's crazy that they grow like this and other tomatoes don't.

pears

2.22.2012

I really like the bruising and colors of these pears.  They are such a simple fruit, but that makes them all the more intriguing to photograph.

missing the citrus color

2.17.2012

I'm really missing the citrus punch these little guys brought to my humble abode.  I wish I had these lining every windowsill.

fiber

2.16.2012

My mother taught me to knit when I was 12 yrs old or so.  She's been knitting for all her life because her mother taught her, so it was only natural that I get taught the trade, too. Ever since, I've been knitting, knitting, knitting.  I've also picked up a serious addiction to all types of fibers thick or thin.  Knitting is a sense pleaser--the range of yarn colors, the tactility, the hand motions, the satisfying clickclickclick of the needles.  I'm glad that I've got the knitting strand in my dna & glad that my mom taught me what I needed to know to foster it.

pink

2.15.2012

It's been a while since I've done any still life that doesn't involve food. So, the other day I got inspired by the little pink pin (bottom of image) that I got from ban.do and decided I'd pair it with this Dandelion blush from benefit cosmetics.

valentine's dog

2.14.2012

Well, it's Valentine's day.  For some reason, I rather enjoy this day full of red + pink hearts, confetti, chocolate, romance, confections, etc. etc. I guess I'm just a romantic.  Happy Valentine's day!

blooming tea pt. ii video

2.11.2012

I edited my blooming tea video yesterday.  It's a work in progress. I'm working on getting my feet wet with the ins & outs of videography.  Thus far, I enjoy the process, but am realizing that I need help during the actual shooting, which is something I'm unaccustomed to when I shoot still life/food.  Eventually, I'll work out the kinks, but for now, enjoy the final product!

Blooming Tea Video

blooming tea pt. ii

2.10.2012

I've got a little bit of a tea obsession going on, I know, but how can you not enjoy something as pretty as this?  Yesterday, I created a little tea scene and took some video.  I'm going to start piecing it together and hopefully, I'll have something equally pretty to share!

ominous ginger

2.08.2012

I'm going through a little bit of a dark phase in my photography.  For the longest time, I was shooting food on bright, airy surfaces, but now I'm yearning for some darkness.  While food looks great in bright light, I think it might look even better in the dark.  There's an ominous quality to it that gives the food some personality that it doesn't normally have.

brie cheese

2.07.2012

I love how brie has this weird pillowy, soft texture to it.

aged apples

2.06.2012

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it again & again, but you can find beauty in anything. These apples were past their prime and getting smooshy, but due to their aging they gained texture which they normally never have.  There's beauty in all sorts of aging-- even in apples.

spring has already sprung

2.03.2012

It has been so unusually warm down here in the South that it feels like it has been spring for the past month and a half.  It's strange to think that this time last year we were experiencing a three day blizzard.

blossoming tea

I never knew that there was such a thing as blossoming tea until recently.  I found some beautiful buds at the farmers market last week and was so happy to see the buds unfurl in hot water. This discovery has me wanting to find all the different kinds of blossoming tea and do something really extraordinary with them.

quail eggs

2.01.2012

Quail eggs are so intriguing to me.  I love their spots and coloration.

february 1st

It's officially the second month of 2012. It's February. Time for romance, hearts, pink & red, cupcakes, and sweets. For whatever reason, I really love Valentine's Day. I think it's because I still enjoy making Valentine's cards that I send out to my family and closest friends.
